When The Void Screams Back

That’s when you have to worry
When the tortured soul of the universe bellows sad trombones and sadder caricatures of disillusioned poets your way
When the Earth turns sideways along an unfamiliar axis and the bottom drops out
That’s when you have to concern yourself with not getting the taxes done on time or taking out the trash on a weekly basis
Can’t let that garbage pile up
Or ignore the vast, sorrowful pit the wide world calls its doldrums
Its waiting for you on the edge of town
And it is screaming screaming screaming through the neighborhood
‘Won't you be my servant?'
When the void hollers back at you, be running
Be running from the familiar, horrific echo.
Bring a map.
You'll still get lost, but at least you will know it.
Escape only fails when fear finds you empty-handed
And afraid.
